How to make Indori Spicy Poha

I would agree with me that when it comes to street food, every city has its own specialty.  But there are only few scrumptious dishes that are a hit across the nation. One such super tasty dish is Indori Poha. This indori spicy poha recipe is an extremely popular street food served for breakfast in Indore but is now a favourite almost everywhere.

Poha is an Indian dish prepared in the Indian states of Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka and Gujarat, Rajasthan.Poha is an easy ,delicious and healthy breakfast recipe. Poha Originated from Maharashtra. Indori poha tends to be spicy. It is also often served with an extremely Ratlami sev, jeeravan masala, sev bhujia. You can easily get Jeeravan masala, Ratlami sev bhujia  namkeen in supermarkets .


  • Ingredients for Indori Spicy Poha

  • 2 cup Flattened rice / Poha (thick variety)
  • 2-3 mustard oil
  • 1 Tbsp mustard seeds
  • 1 Tbsp fennel seeds
  • 15-20 roasted peanuts
  • 8-10 Curry Leaves
  • 1/2 Tablespoon sugar
  • 1/4 Tbsp turmeric powder
  • 2 green chillies, chopped
  • 1/2 tablespoon red chilli powder
  • Salt to taste
  • 1/2 tablespoon garam masala(optional)
  • 1/4 tablespoon coriander powder(optional)
  • 1 Lemon
  • 1 Medium onion, chopped
  • 2-3 Tablespoon Sev Bhujia
  • 1 Tbsp Jeeravan masala
  • 1 Lemon
  • 2 Tbsp Coriander leaves finely chopped
  • 2 Tbsp Pomegranate seeds for garnishing


  1. Take a bowl and soak poha in water for 1-2 minutes. Drain excess water and keep it aside for few minutes to rest.

  2. Add red chilli, turmeric, sugar and salt in soaked poha which we had kept aside. Mix it well.This is to ensure that each flake of poha gets the spice.

  3. Heat oil in a pan and temper it with fennel seeds, mustard seeds.

  4. Once the seeds are lightly roasted, add chopped green chillies and curry leaves. Saute it for one minute.

  5. Once the wonderful curry leaves release the aroma, add Soaked poha mixture and stir it for a minute.

  6. Add Jeeravan masala and mix well.

  7. Now cover the lid and let it cook for 3-4 minutes on slow heat.

  8. Switch off the heat after 3-4 minutes, Poha should be ready by that time.

  9. Add lemon juice according to your taste.

  10. Garnish it with Some chopped onion, coriander, peanuts , sev and pomegranate seeds.

  11. Serve it hot with a cup of tea .
